A DESIRE TO SEE


A desire to see - Utrecht (2018)


This image testifies my desire to see, which is a universal desire, a normal abandonment to the sensations of the body. However, when we add to the experiences the dualistic scrutiny that divides, transforming the sensation into a mere rhetoric of values, qualities, and personal interests, here is the fictitious creative gesture superimposed on a fictitious story, a series of ideas and allusions that have nothing to do with Reality.

Mannequin # 04731 - Perugia Taking pictures of dummies to discover their semantic power, their metaphorical meaning. Us and Them. What are the differences? Certainly, they let themselves be photographed. They are not shy. They do not react to the camera's hypnotic force. They are exceptional, impassive models of an almost alien nobility. Is it them who resemble us, or is it us who wish to look like them? Dreaming of artificial intelligences and cyborgs, in a future that is now increasingly less sci-fi and more available, mannequins remind us of these glorious in-animated creatures, which means "without a soul". Perfect, modeled, programmed creatures. Again, who looks like who? And then, here is the hand that dresses them, that positions them, that shows them. It is a gesture that begins as a reaction but becomes controlled and deeply aware over time. It is to satisfy the need to record one's own vision, no matter whether for fun or artistic research. It is a sequence of intents, a flow of movements that starts from the recognition of the scene, goes on with a thoughtful technical execution aimed at its acquisition, and ends with the slight touch of the shutter button.
