FAITHFUL TO MEMORY

 

Hands and Shadows - Utrecht 2020

If your memory is true to you, then the stories will take shape, wonderful and harmless.

But if you let memory take over, you will blur the waters of Reality, as sand does when it is moved on the bottom of a lake.

So may the memory of your experiences turn into fuel for your creativity, and let it not become the steam that clouds the sight of the soul, in eternal contemplation of what is real.

Mannequin # 04731 - Perugia Taking pictures of dummies to discover their semantic power, their metaphorical meaning. Us and Them. What are the differences? Certainly, they let themselves be photographed. They are not shy. They do not react to the camera's hypnotic force. They are exceptional, impassive models of an almost alien nobility. Is it them who resemble us, or is it us who wish to look like them? Dreaming of artificial intelligences and cyborgs, in a future that is now increasingly less sci-fi and more available, mannequins remind us of these glorious in-animated creatures, which means "without a soul". It is a gesture that begins as a reaction but becomes controlled and deeply aware over time. It is to satisfy the need to record one's own vision, no matter whether for fun or artistic research. It is a sequence of intents, a flow of movements that starts from the recognition of the scene, goes on with a thoughtful technical execution aimed at its acquisition, and ends with the slight touch of the shutter button.
